UMF vs MGO: How to Choose the Right Manuka Honey (2026 Buyer's Guide)

If you've ever stood in front of a shelf of manuka honey wondering why one jar costs $30 and another costs $200, you're not alone. The difference comes down to two rating systems — UMF and MGO — and once you understand them, choosing the right jar takes about thirty seconds.

What makes manuka honey different from regular honey?

Manuka honey comes from bees that feed on the manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. What sets it apart is a naturally occurring compound called methylglyoxal (MGO) — found in manuka at levels far higher than in any other honey. MGO is the main reason manuka is prized for supporting general wellbeing and immune health, and it's exactly what the numbers on the label measure.

MGO: the direct measurement

The MGO rating is the simplest of the two: it tells you the milligrams of methylglyoxal per kilogram of honey.

  • MGO 100+ — entry level, great as an everyday table honey
  • MGO 250–400 — mid-strength, the most popular range for daily wellness routines
  • MGO 550–850 — high strength
  • MGO 950+ — ultra-premium, among the rarest grades produced

So a jar labelled MGO 400+ is certified to contain at least 400mg of methylglyoxal per kilogram. Higher number, higher potency, higher price.

UMF: the broader quality standard

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is a grading system run by New Zealand's UMF Honey Association. It measures MGO too, but also verifies other markers — leptosperin (which proves the honey genuinely comes from manuka nectar) and DHA — and requires the honey to be packed in New Zealand under licence.

Think of it this way: MGO tells you the strength; UMF certifies both the strength and the authenticity.

UMF to MGO conversion chart

UMF rating Approx. MGO equivalent Best for
UMF 5+ MGO 83+ Everyday use, smoothies, toast
UMF 10+ MGO 263+ Daily wellness support
UMF 13+ MGO 400+ Stepped-up immune support
UMF 15+ MGO 514+ High-strength support
UMF 20+ MGO 829+ Premium, taken neat by the spoon
UMF 24+ MGO 950+ Ultra-premium, collector grade

So which grade should you buy?

For first-timers and everyday use: start with UMF 6+ / MGO 115+. You get genuine manuka character at a gentle price point — perfect stirred into warm (not boiling) water, drizzled on yoghurt, or straight off the spoon.

For daily wellness routines: UMF 10+ / MGO 263+ is the sweet spot most of our customers settle on. It's the grade where manuka's signature properties become meaningful without the premium price tag of the top tiers.

For winter and high-demand periods: UMF 13+ / MGO 400+ and above. Many customers keep a higher-grade jar for the colder months and a lower grade for everyday use.

As a gift: UMF 20+ / MGO 850+ and up. Ultra-high-grade manuka is a genuinely impressive gift in many cultures, particularly when it carries certified UMF branding.

How to spot genuine manuka honey

Counterfeit and diluted manuka is a real problem — more "manuka" is sold worldwide each year than New Zealand actually produces. Before you buy, check:

  1. A specific MGO or UMF number on the label — vague terms like "active" or "bio-active" without a number mean nothing
  2. The UMF licence number if UMF-branded (verifiable on the UMF Honey Association website)
  3. Country of origin — genuine UMF manuka is packed in New Zealand
  4. A batch number — reputable brands like Comvita and Manuka Health let you trace every jar

At Phoenix Beauty we stock only certified manuka from established brands — including Manuka Health (MGO 115+ through MGO 950+) and Comvita (UMF 10+ and UMF 20+) — shipped from our Sydney warehouse, so you know exactly what's in the jar.

How to take manuka honey

  • Straight: 1 teaspoon, 1–2 times daily is the traditional approach
  • In drinks: stir into warm water or tea below 40°C — high heat degrades MGO
  • Don't give honey of any kind to infants under 12 months

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher MGO always better? Higher means more methylglyoxal, but "better" depends on use. For cooking or daily toast, paying for MGO 850+ is overkill — MGO 115–263 does the job. Save the high grades for taking neat.

Does manuka honey expire? Honey keeps almost indefinitely when sealed and stored cool, but MGO levels are certified at packing. For maximum potency, use within the best-before date and always check it before buying (we do this for every jar we ship).

UMF 10+ or MGO 400+ — which is stronger? MGO 400+ is stronger. UMF 10+ converts to roughly MGO 263+, so MGO 400+ sits closer to UMF 13+.
